Flat oil lamp wick brass burners haven't changed their design principles since they were invented.

generally, a threaded collar is fitted to the lamp's oil reservoir, and the burner is screwed into the collar. The burner allows the correct air draught through the fretwork or gaps to produce the correct atmosphere in the chimney or globe to produce a steady, soot-free, bright flame. The purpose of the wick is to soak up and lift fuel, be it lamp oil, kerosene, paraffin, or K1, to the tip of the wick and, more importantly, to stop burning embers from falling down the wick guide into the fuel container. During use, carbon and oily soot can build up in the winding mechanism, which reduces light output and should be cleaned when a new wick is required. In simple, popular lamps, the wick is threaded up the burner's slot wick guide and engages a toothed wheel on a shaft connected to a control wheel to raise the lower wick and extinguish the flame. Cosmos burners use a flat wick, as it is raised through the burner's curled round to form a circular wick, ideal for background lighting. Kosmos burners originate from European manufactures and are often used in marine lamps such as Sorensen and DHR. More decorative lamps made in France by Gaudard use both flat wick burners and cosmos burners. Bigger lamps, such as GWTW lamps, require a wide wick and are often fitted with Hinks-style burners, with the added benefit of being a useful heat source. Flat-wick burners have far lower operating costs than proprietary Aladdin lamps and avoid stock availability issues. Hurricane flat-wick storm lanterns, barn lamps, and storm lanterns are popular for camping and outdoor use and power outages for preparedness and fishing.
